Communication between people

People communicate using words. Every word fires off associations in your brain - if you think of a word, it is symbolic of all the connections formed in your brain around that word. For example, if I say the word "apple" - all sorts of associations fire in our brains simultaneously - the colours, textures, taste of apples we ate - trees, tarts, pies, new york, apple crumble.... ad infinitum. The word apple is just a symbol of what we actually mean. It is a good enough approximation, but our brains have to analyse the context, the body language, the tone of voice to pick out the correct meaning. A lot of people believe that when a word comes into our consciousness (or we become aware of a word below the level of consciousness), all the associations with that word are fired off in our brain simultaneously, and our amazing brain then picks out the correct meaning. Even if we could somehow connect our neurons directly together, we would still not get the exact meaning to someone else, as a lifetime of brain connections formed about that word would also have to be transmitted. We also shorten what we mean, e.g. "I'm going out" is not a precise communication. I didn't say "I'm going to stand up now, use all my muscle movements to walk in that direction, move my hand to the door knob..........etc". People misunderstand each other all the time, but fortunately, we have enough in common with each other to understand enough of what we are saying most of the time!

Axes & research & development

Today Conor Lenihan had some criticism for his brother Brian in the Dept of Finance. He said the Minister for Finance has an axe, which he sometimes wields indiscriminately. Conor is the minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, and he makes the point that money has to be spent on research and development to help economic recovery.

That reminds me of the story about two brothers chopping wood. Jack was really going all out to get his pile of wood chopped. John took it a little easier, and even sat down and took a break every now and then. At the end of a couple of hours, Johns pile of wood was much bigger. Jack was astonished. John smiled as he looked at Jacks pile and said "While I rested, I recovered my strength. I also took the time to sharpen my axe!"

Road Safety & Automatic Learning

Ireland is to be awarded today for cutting road deaths since 2001. This leads me to a train of thought - most of what we do in unconscious. It took a lot of effort and learning to learn how to walk, but now you don't think about how you walk, you say "I want to walk there", and your subconscious mind automatically takes care of all the muscle movements and sense of where you are, and you arrive at your destination. Car driving is similar, I often use car driving as an example of a natural state of trance - I don't remember driving through all those towns - but since it's unlikely aliens beamed me here, I must have been driving in a trance. Of course, our bad habits also become automatic as well as the good habits. Remember all the snow and ice earlier on in the year? Even though road conditions were so dangerous, we all had to consciously drive more carefully, and we changed (yes temporarily I know!) the way we drive. Road injuries and deaths immediately after the snow and ice were the lowest in decades. Was this because the snow and ice taught us how to drive more carefully?
